Can't update my iPod

Hi, Im trying to update my iPod to ios6 which requires 2.7GB. For me obtain this space I deleted all of my apps but I still don't have enough space for the update (2.3GB). On the back of my iPod it says 8GB but in the settings it says 2.3GB available and around 4GB used so this makes no sence. Can someone please tell me why it's like this and I have to do. Thank you.

An 8 GB iPod has only about 6.4 GB available. the difference from 8 GB is due to the operating system taking up most of it and the remainder is how GB is advertised and actually used/reported.

How Mac OS X and iOS report storage capacity

You need to free up more storage if you want to update via wifi. You can connect to your syncing computer and update via iTunes without having to delete anything.

As a precaution incase anything goes wrong during the update I would backup to both iCloud and iTunes before updating.
