For some weeks I have been having crashes requiring restarts almost on a daily basis on my MBP. I've gone through most if not all of the usual troubleshooting steps. The logs don't reveal anything, the hardware test doesn't show any problems, memory checks out, etc. My plan was to reinstall Mountain Lion once I get past several critical projects I'm working on at the moment.

However, the last couple of days I have been having a different kind of crash where there is no warning (slowdown, spinning ball, etc.) but the screen locks up and colored squares appear on it, gradually increasing in number. You can see an example on the attached image. Does this point to anything specific, like the graphics hardware?
