Mac Mail is toes up

I was in China with my Powerbook and it became apparant that no new mail was being recieved. I have a gmail account for which I had forgotten to bring the password, so I couldn't log in to gmail to see if the problem was global or just on the Powerbook. Home again on my iMac I see it was not global.

Looked around on the internet - guy said delete your plist. I did it, but now I no messages in my Inbox or Sent folders (I do have everything in folders I have created to stass different types of email in). Also it seems I can no longer send any email from the powerbook. The send button is grayed out and won't respond.

Suggestions?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

My problem with Mail is on my Powerbook running OS 10.6.8.

OK, Powerbooks can not run 10.6.8, so which do you have, a Powerbook with something less than 10.6.8, or 10.6.8 on something newer than a Powerbook?

(Powerbook production ended in 2006, if that helps you discover what you have) if you bought it after 2006 you have a Macbook, or a Macbook Pro.
