Novell Client for Mac

Hello,

My college asks me to use Novell Client for accessing common folder and and my personal folder on the central server. They tell me this can be done only on Windows OS since Novell is not available for OS X. I would like to know if there is any other way I can access these folders using OS X.

In the Windows Novell Client I have to enter my personal username and password alongwith details in the Tree, Context and Server. How can I use these details in OS X ?

Thanks.

As long as the backend NetWare or OES servers support either CIFS or AFP, you should be able to browse to them in Finder and access the content without installing any sort of client at all on the Mac. You would then use your eDirectory credentials (the same credentials you use in the Novell Client for Windows) to authenticate and mount the volumes.

Another thing to look into is to ask the folks administering your Novell environment if they've installed Kanaka. Kanaka is a free entitlement to OES customers current on maintenance that eases the access to resources from OS X. You would install the Kanaka Client in OS X and when you logged in to your Mac it would automount all of the same NetWare/OES resources as the Windows PCs do based on the login script mappings. It's a great solution for Mac.

Yes I believe you would use "connect to server". As far as what you'd type, well, that would be the UNC path to the server. To get an idea, take a look at the drive mappings from a Windows PC. For example if you see that F: is mapped to \\server1\sys then you would type \\server1\sys on the Mac. The folks that run your environment should be able to provide this info for you. And again, while talking to them ask them about Kanaka. Kanaka will greatly simplify your life.

QUESTION!!!!!

I have a new MacBook Pro (MBP) with Maverick. I think it is a very good machine but I am an old Windows person so there is somewhat of a learning curve. My work LAN is powered by Novell Netware. While I am able to get the MBP to connect to Novell server, the only way I've been able to see drives and files is using Windows Explorer. I installed Windows 7 on MBP.

My IT people are of little assistance. I'm not a technical individual. I am reading of Kanaka. Will this work on Maverick? Will Kanaka, if it will work, have to be installed on the work server, or just my MBP or both?

If Kanaka not needed, any suggestions regarding resolution?

Thanks.

Kanaka is the easiest way to get access to Novell NetWare and Novell Open Enterprise Server resources on a Mac. However, it requires an engine to be installed on the server in addition to the client being installed on the Mac. Installing the client alone won't help. Here's the documentation for Kanaka which you can share with your IT people. It's extremely simple to install the server components and the documentation walks through exactly how to do this.
