You can't make backups of your Mac on iCloud. The best is to make backups onto an external drive, so you can access to backups at any moment instead of having to connect to Internet

It is a disk drive that is in an external enclosure and connected to the Mac by a cable.

OWC as Allan suggests is a reliable vendor. Look for one that connects via Firewire, as that is the fastest port on your Mac.
