Q: card reader question

I am trying to use a Class 10 memory card in the SD card slot on my macbook pro, but it doesn't appear on the desktop. why is that? it works fine with the 27" iMacs in my school's computer lab. thanks!

(PS) i have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I'm just going to bring in my mac to be looked at since it seems that the Card Reader isn't the only port that has been malfunctioning recently. thanks for the help though!

Make sure that external device are enabled to show up on the desktop by selecting (from the Finder) the menu item "Finder > Preferences":

Now make sure that "External disks" is checked in the bottom section

well, i'm not sure what class # the card reader is in my laptop... anyone know?

Open System Information in the folder "/Applications/Utilities", then select "Card Reader" on the left before the card is plugged in, then aplug the card in and use the key combination <COMMAND> + r to refresh

AFTER INSERT CARD:

The 9th line of text shows this is a class 4 card. I THINK the macbook pros can handle up to SDXC byt I was not quickly able to locate that information
