Please fix the error and restart.

I already tried reinstalling Java (Version 7, update 25) and I tried disabling Java 7 and tried using Java 6. No bueno.

Terminal recognizes that Java is installed, and I have the preference panel under system settings. Help?

For what it is worth, I had this same problem. In my case the cause was that the account where I was trying to run Minecraft was managed by Parental Controls, and it had restricted access to web sites.

Because I hadn't whitelisted https://s3.amazonaws.com/ for that account, the Minecraft launcher couldn't download files from that web site.

I found that adding https://s3.amazonaws.com/ to the list of whitelisted web sites fixed this error and allowed Minecraft to run. There is still one problem: the Minecraft Launcher's "Update Notes" tab displayed either a blank black screen or a permissions error. (But everything else works fine.)

A second work-around I found was to change the account to have unrestricted web access. At that point Minecraft worked without any problems.
