You can't exchange the MacBook Pro by a new one, but you can recycle it with Apple and get an Apple Store gift card that you can use to purchase the new MacBook. See > http://www.apple.com/recycling You can also sell it if you want

If by exchange you mean Trade-In...
Apple does not do Trade ins...
See Apple's ‘Buy Back’ program here... But you may prefer to sell it privately...

Oh that's funny because the page here (https://www.apple.com/recycling/) says, "For qualifying devices, you’ll receive a gift card online, and credit toward a purchase in-store..." pretty big and bold on their website. I checked and in its base model, this would qualify. I guess I'm asking if it has upgrades, does that void the offer?
What if I have made upgrades in RAM and the Hard Drive for my MB Pro? If I traded in say a mid 2009 MB Pro with a Seagate 1TB SSD and 8 GB of Crucial RAM, how would that, if at all, change the trade in price?
I think I and others have already said they have a recycle program. In fact the same link you posted was already posted. If you want to take advantage of that program please do so. You will likely get more for your old computer if you sell it privately.
No. Apple does not have a trade-in program. As already said, they have a recycle program. Sell the computer privately.
...also, they are taking 4 to 6 weeks to get the pittance they pay into your hand -- far to long to be useful in the purchase of a new computer.
