will the gps still work when you have no wi-fi or cell service?

Just like with an iPhone, if you don't have a sim card installed and there is no WiFi, the GPS will work regardless. I do this all the time with an old 3GS phone. I've also done this with my iPad using TomTom with everything such as WiFi and Cellular turned off.
It is true. GPS is fully functional with no internet connection at all. Whether or not it is of any use for satnav depends on whether the maps that you need to see where you are are already stored in the phone, as they are if you use, for example, a TomTom App. The cheaper and free satnav apps require an internet connection to download mapping on the go.

Yes you can use GPS on a boat. You must download the charts of the area you will be sailing in to your iPad before leaving. Keep in mind that the iPad is very hard to view in bright sunlight.
Of course my response assumes you have the correct iPad model that has the GPS hardware. The wifi-only iPad does not contain GPS hardware.

Then you have a wifi-only iPad that does not include GPS hardware. Or, if you have a wifi+cellular iPad, you need to find someone to help you turn on GPS and use it.
GPS signals are separate from and completely unrelated to both the Internet and the cellular telephone network. GPS signals come directly from the GPS satellites. They provide signals that allow GPS receivers to calculate latitude and longitude information. Navigation software then takes that latitude/longitude info and converts it to land mass, roads, bridges, highways, buildings, etc.
Most navigation software stores the maps right in the iPad/iPod/iPhone but a disadvantage is that the maps must be periodically updated (perhaps once every two years). The Internet is not required to use the system but it is required to update the maps.
Some navigation software gets the maps from the Internet and requires an Internet connection to function but an advantage is that the maps are always up-to-date.
The WiFi+3G/4G iPad and the iPhone both have a GPS receiver. The WiFi-only iPad and the iPod do not and these devices require an accessory.
Yes it does.
As posted above-if you have a cellular capable iPad it has a GPS chip.
The GPS chip will work independent of wifi or cellular connection.
Get some navigation software that downloads the maps-copilot,motion x, telenav, etc.
no, it needs some type of wi-fi or cellular connection.
Yes.
It only uses the wifi or cell service for quicker location.
It is not necessary for it to have either.
That is not true
No it won't work

Yes it will work. GPS does not require cell or wifi to work.

You should learn more about GPS before posting. GPS uses GPS satllites not cell or wifi networks.
Mo, it won't work.
No, it won't work.
