I'm afraid it could take more longer than 72 hours,

    Copied from: iPhone: About unlocking

Follow these instructions to unlock your iPhone:

    1. Check if your carrier offers unlocking. Only your carrier can unlock your iPhone.
    2. Contact your carrier and request an unlock.
      • You may need to meet certain requirements to qualify for unlocking. This may take up to seven days.
    3. Once you receive confirmation that your iPhone unlock has been processed, back up your iPhone.
    4. Erase the contents of your iPhone.
    5. Complete the setup assistant and restore your backup.

That's up to the carrier, maybe contact them again and ask when it will be unlocked.

You'll have to wait until the data has been passed on to Apple by the provider, that's all you can do, sorry.

That will depend on the carrier. Some carries are quick to process ( a couple of hours) and others take weeks to process.

Thanks, the person at Telstra said she submitted the request and it would take apple up to 72 hours to send me a code to unlock it.

There no "unlock" code. You will get an email from the cell provider instructing you how to complete unlock. It will essentially involve doing a backup via iTunes, and then restoring the phone as new, and then restoring from the backup.

Make sure you follow the instructions.

Yes. If you want to restore it to the same state as it was before you erased it. After restoring as new did you get the message on iTunes:

"Congratulations. Your phone is now unlocked" ?

A little confused here. I am not worried about restoring my phone as it was as I am giving it to my nephew so I went straight to the part " Erase all content and setting" just by doing that does that unlock the phone? As that's what I have done.

And I don't think it unlocks straight away as the email got from Telstra advises

Your request to unlock your iPhone is almost complete. The request has been submitted to Apple and to complete this process you need to follow these instructions from Apple.

Please wait 72 hours before you do this to provide sufficient time for Apple to action our request.

You can check to see if your phone is unlocked by inserting a different carrier's SIM card.

If you're having any difficulty, ask the crowd at CrowdSupport®. Alternatively, you can find more help at Apple Support Communities.

If you want to give it to your nephew, just skip the part of using the backup to restore from and start it "as new device". This way no personal settings will be transferred to the phone.

Don't forget about the second part of the article mentioned above:

    Additional Information

Follow the steps below if you experience issues or receive the following error message displayed in iTunes or on your device:

"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carrier store."

    1. Restore your iPhone.
    2. Contact your carrier to verify that the unlock was applied in your carrier's system.

So, as soon as you insert the new SIM, you'll know if it is unlocked.
