Apple TVI believe I've seen people remove the device from Find my phone using iCloud.com and it has canceled the wipe command. I cannot confirm this, it's not something I've tried (or want to try )

Jul 4, 2013 5:34 AM in response to Winston Churchillby timothykircher,Thank you for the very prompt reply. My service provider is unblocking the SIM in the next day or so, and that will give me time to consider your suggestion. If anyone has tried this solution, I'd be happy to hear about the results.

Jul 4, 2013 5:48 AM in response to timothykircherby fromsouth,If you also backed up to icloud, that I have seen work, you just restore from that backup after erase is over.

Jul 9, 2013 10:12 AM in response to fromsouthby timothykircher,Thanks for the advice. What happened is that the phone was never erased. I'm not sure why: perhaps because I backed up the phone to the computer before connecting it to the network (I had it in Airplane mode).

Jul 9, 2013 11:28 AM in response to timothykircherby fromsouth,I have mixed feelings about that. I would talk to Apple and find out, or at the very least try to find out what happened. You do want to make sure, that when you do need to press that button- it works. Right?

I accidentally set my girlfriends iPod to erase and before she turned it on. I deleted the iPod from my device
list on FindMyIphone App, and by deleting it, it cancel the erase request.
