On OS 10.8.4, I had Mail set so a window at the top of the list of messages in my inbox showed the content of the selected messages. This morning that window mysteriously vanished. Now I just see a list of messages, and by double clicking on any message, the content opens in a separate window. How do I restore the window in the top of the message list?

That worked...almost! The message content is now to the right of the message list. How do I get the message list to go below the message content?
You can get the message to appear below the message list via "Use classic layout" in Mail, Preferences, Viewing. I don't know if it's possible to put the message above the list without some third-party modification.
Off the top of my head, as I don't have Mail to hand right now:
View menu >> Preview Pane >> Top or Bottom
Thanks! The classic view doesn't show previews. I could have sworn that, until an hour ago, I had the list below the message content, allowing for a wider preview of the messages.
The View menu doesn't have a Preview Pane option. I searched on Mail help for Preview Pane but found nothing relevant.
My classic view shows previews. Double-click on the border at the bottom of the message viewer.
Double-clicking on the border between the list of messages at the top and the content pane at the bottom causes the content pane to disappear or reappear. I don't have a border at the bottom of the content pane.
I see. I thought you were talking about the "content pane" all along.
Anyway...
The only other option I can point you to is "List preview" in Mail, Preferences, Viewing. This option (to display some lines of each message inside the message list) is not available in the classic layout.
Yes, I know about the List preview option in mail. I would just like to see these previews stretched across the mail window at the bottom of the content pane, rather than compressed to a narrow column to the left of the content pane. I had that option until this morning, and I'm still mourning its mysterious loss.
