Has anyone installed the GIMP?

Has anyone installed the GIMP on their iBook? I have a couple questions because of the way their site is worded:

http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/

In the requirements section are they just explaining why it doens't run on version 9 or earlier? It almost makes it sound like you have to go download that stuff (which is why I feel stupid for asking this). :-/

This site, http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/ , which is the first site they list on the places to get GIMP, makes it sound like the application there is all you have to download, except for the extra install from the OS X Install Disk. Would that be all I needed?

I'd love to have this program on my iBook, so if anyone who has installed it could walk me through it, that'd be great. 🙂

Hi Mandy,

I myself have not tried GIMP.app because I have lost the urge to use X11. In order to use it, you will to download X11 from your OS X disk and install X11; not to be confused with X11SDK. I bet you can find a bunch of GIMP and X11 users in Mac OS X Technologies > Unix forum.

Hi Mandy,

I have downloaded & installed The Gimp. To confirm what you say & as advised by Jon & his linked thread, you only need to install X11 to use it. If you haven't already got X11, it is easy to do from your install disk.
Then just download the .dmg file from your link, open it and drag The Gimp App to your applications folder. More advice in Jon's linked thread.

I haven't worked big time with it, I did it out of curiosity more than anything else. It seems to do everything, and more, that most people, except perhaps professionals, would want of image manipulation SW. Not being a pro, I can't really advise on that score.

You've got nothing to lose in trying it, if you don't like it just trash it & X11.

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your reply as well. I've heard the GIMP is very good for image manipulation, and since I can't install the program I use on my desktop on my iBook, I'm hoping this will work just as well, or better. 🙂 I like the screen on my iBook much better, as it displays images much clearer.

There are many great X11 apps out there.

GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, Openoffice.org (now for mac: neooffice.org - doesn't need X11) are the big ones.

Free: can't beat that.
