The biggest problem I am having is that the rainbow ball and I are now no longer speaking to each other.

It has taken over and for a small icon I don't think it deserves world domination.

This is worse than my first Mac a 1994 2vi.

Not to thrilled that my coffee intake has increased dramatically lately. I am now nearly 20 years older and my doctor has warned me about the caffeine.

Please help as this has taken three days off my life. I might as well start smoking again.

Post your crash reports. You obviously have big issues withyour Mac that others are not experiencing. Usually comes down to Third Party installs or simply bad Hardware/Software. Not normal, so please post Crash reports.

Do as you wish, but if you seriously want to solve your issue then simply cut and paste your last Crash Report as everyone else does in this situation.

Launch Activity Monitor - it's in your Applictions / Utilties folder.

Click on the Memory Tab and watch as the machine slows down. Is there a process there that's using more and more memory?

Something simple that no one has mentioned yet, try booting

the machine into safe mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11212).

This can quickly determine if it is a third party item that is the culprit

as it does not load any startup items or third party drivers. If things

work well in this mode, then disable all startup items and normal boot.

If there is still an issue after disabling the startup items, then it is likely

a bad driver and need to ferret out which one it is.

BTW, startup (log in) items are listed in Preferences->Users&Groups.

There may also be some located in \Library\Startup Items.

Have you tried setting up a new User, and then signing on with that? Make it your Guest User if you'd like, and make it an Admin. I know it sounds crazy, but I have seen posts where that has helped to isolate the problem to the User setup.

Also, you stated you had sophos running? There is a long running debate on this forum about the prudence of running any sort of Anti Virus software on your Mac. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it as they are known to gum things up in general, and pretty much do more harm than good. Obviously, it's a personal call. But, I only see the SBBD (spinning beach ball of death) on rare occasions, and then only briefly, so there's that....

Just a few thoughts and ideas for you to try....

Keep us informed. We have a lot of very knowledgeable people on this forum who have helped others out of these Mac mutinies.....

P.S. - I would not be one of the people mentioned above. What I have suggested above is the extent of my knowledge in this arena, but we have several very knowledgeable system people here....so hang in there!

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "I/O error" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).

The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.

A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:

kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error

the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.

Back up all data.

Boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.
