how to delete "free form" text boxes in Pages '09?

Select the text boxes so you can see tha handles (squareson the border) and then delete

Are you asking about the header & footer in a word processing document? You can reduce the size to zero &/or uncheck them in the document inspector.

How did you get these documents and what are the "fre form textboxes"?

Is this in a Word document?

You may have floating textboxes containing page numbers. To get at those you need to hold down the command key and drag in from off the page and "lassoo" them, then delete them.
