It is an old communicaitons protocol that should not be active on a Mac. It was intially used for communcaitons among locally connected PC's and is broadcast based. It will display the name located in system prefences/network/ interface then WINS. Making your workstation identifiable on a network.
I would recommend removing as you would be hard pressed to find any network that uses this protocol and I don't know why Apple implemented as TCP/IP is the standard.
Ok, Mister macfrombrampton, so you learn how to answer here in the forums, now tell tsnature HOW he should go about "removing" the netbiosd process, launched automatically by the launchd master controller and present in all OS X versions up to and including Mountain Lion.
tsnature Note the reply from Courcoul. I know you know how to delete the file since you pointed out the path. Remember this is one of many ways you can be identified on a network.
