Bridge Mode

My existing setup is as follows:

Airport Extreme connected to Cable Modem and set to create a wireless network (Upstairs) and the other extreme (Downstairs) location is set to extend the range.

I will like to hook up the two extremes via ethernet so that I can have the same speed throughout the house and will like to know the setting to use for the two (Upstairs and Downstairs) in Bridge mode.

Only my Computer upstairs and the AppleTV Downstairs will be on the ethernet and all other iDevices will connect with WiFi.

With all base stations connected by Ethernet you have the basis for a roaming network.

To configure a successful roaming network, the following settings are key:

  • Each base station in the roaming network must have a unique base station name.
  • Each base station must be connected back to the "main" base station by Ethernet.
  • Each base station must use the same Network Name & Wireless Security type/password.
  • Except for the "main" base station, each base station should be configured as a bridge.

The following are the basic settings using AirPort Utility v6.x:

AirPort Extreme (Upstairs)

  • Wireless tab: Network Mode: Create a wireless network
  • Network tab: Router Mode: DHCP and NAT

AirPort Extreme (Downstairs)

  • Wireless tab: Network Mode: Create a wireless network
  • Network tab: Off (Bridge Mode)
