Q: CAC readers not working after installing security update 2013-003?

Is anyone else having problems with CAC readers not working after installing security update 2013-003? CAC required websites are causing safari and chrome to crash.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Back up all data.

 

Boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

    Additionally, mail now freezes when I click on preferences....anyone else?

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.

    Back up all data.

    Triple-click the line below to select it:

    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail

    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

    Services ▹ Reveal

    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.

    Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.

    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

    Go ▹ Go to Folder...

    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

    Linc, thanks for the post, one step closer, but still no luck.

     

    Completed all of your steps, the services -> reveal method worked great.

     

    After deleting the entire file "com.apple.mail" re-opened mail.  Saw the file get re-created.

     

    Preferences now opened, but as soon as I clicked on accounts tab, Mail freezes again.  (After opening Mail a second time, now continues to freeze on Mail -> Preferences)

     

     

     

    Additionally went to System Preferences -> Mail, Contacts & Calendars, deleted out all of the mail accounts.

     

    Still same problem, only one e-mail account now up and running (icloud) and still have mail freezing on preferences.  Any other ideas?

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

     

    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

     

    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

     

    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

     

    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View ▹ Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

     

    Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    These are the two lines that showed up immediatly after sellecting the preferences in Mail, causing the program to freeze

    SASL(-1): generic failure:

     

    The first of the two lines had a full report that I can attach.

     

    Pretty sure that somehow the CAC issue is correlated, also ran a disk-utility and found a file that was corrupt com.apple.preferences.internet.....XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX.plist


    The disk utility was able to repair it though.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.

     

    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
       
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

     

    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

     

    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    No luck, same problem in safe mode.

     

    I am probably going to erase the partition and give it a clean install....thoughts?

    Thanks, I think I will take the oportunity to do a clean install and get rid of a bunch of the chaff that has been hanging around.  Appreciate the help, wish it had been a cleaner solution.
