My new Time Capsule is broadcasting a Network but nothing will connect to it?

I have been trying to set up my Time Capsule for three days, reading all the help guides, questions, and nothing I do will get this thing to work correctly.

My inititial attempt connected my Macbook only. I downloaded Airplay to my iPad and iPhones and nothing would sync up to the new network. I reset the Time Capsule and tried to extend my old ISP network, still nothing. I reset the Time Capsule to the manufacturer settings and got everything so it looked like it was working - until I realized everything - including my Macbook was still connected to my old ISP network, and when I tried to swtich everything to the network the Time Capsule created, no device will connect to it, although every one of them picks it up.

I have the Time Capsule connected to my ISP routed by ethernet connection. Most of the time, I cannot get my Macbook to connect to the Time Capsule to even attempt to change the settings or reset to the factory default.

Is it supposed to be this hard?

No it is not supposed to be hard.

Mixing networks though is never easy if you haven't done this stuff before.. it is often better to get the washing machine repairman in when the washing machine goes bung.. same applies to networks. The lie is that all networking is a cake walk.. it isn't.. it can get down right impossible.

Start over.. sorry you are going to hate me..

Factory reset the TC again.

Plug it into one computer by ethernet. Using the 6.3 airport utility (because it is the only one that works).. and with ipv6 local-link turned on for ethernet (and wireless for later on. ) in complete isolation. no other connections to the TC or the computer (turn off wifi in the computer).. set the TC into bridge mode.

Setup wireless while you are there.. all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

Update the TC..

Now leaving the TC plugged into that one computer by ethernet.. get another ethernet cable and plug it into router.. use WAN port of the TC to the router.. but this is just for ease of support.. it doesn't matter really.

Now check you have internet on this computer. If it fails.. no problem.. reboot the whole network from off.. restart in correct order. modem.. wait 2min.. TC.. wait 2min then computer.

Do you have internet on the wired computer? If not take the TC back to apple for testing. If apple says it is ok.. call the washing machine repairman. Alias network guru/computer support technician.

If you do have internet now go to another computer or device and connect to the wireless. Do you get internet?

LaPastenague,

Thank you, I tried this, and when I reset the Time Capsule and connected my MacBook, nothing happened. The utility said it was searching for the TC for several minutes until I gave up and reconnected it to the internet and tried to set it up again that way - with the same results. A network that nothing recognizes.

Yes, I think I need the Maytag repairman - or genius. Unfortunately, there isn't one close to here, so I'm not sure how to deal with this.

I'm not sure if it has something to do with my ISP settings? I only know how to connect to those through a PC. Our last one is out of commission after getting hit by lightning, LOL! None of the Mac's took a hit.

I am having the exact same problem. I followed LaPastenague's protocol above, and have been able to successfully connect to the internet via ethernet cable. However, the wireless is still not conncected to the network, and my network settings say "self-assigned IP address" only under the Wireless settings. I can connect wirelessly to the time capsule, but not to the internet - same for multiple other devices. I set the time capsule settings exactly as above: off/bridge mode, link-local on, etc. Do the wireless settings need to be different for this to work?

If you plug your computer.. the Mac in particular into the modem with ethernet cord do you get internet connection?

If yes, then the computer and modem are ok.. and I would ring Apple Support and get them to step you though the connection.. There are a reasonable number of faulty out of the box TC and AE.. Apple can determine this and then will get you to send the old one back and replace it.

If you have an ipad or iphone I would try using the airport utility on one of those.. people have been more successful with the wireless app in the ios than the computer.. although it is limited subset of what the computer utility can do.

A lot of ifs..

Let me deal with yours separately..

But if you have an iOS device same thing.. try the ios version of the airport utility.. people have found it more successful.

I am a computer man so I only know it from the computer side.

What I would do is reset to factory.. always easier to start over.

Check in the wifi of the computer that it lists the new airport signal from the TC.. if not you can be pretty sure the unit is faulty.

Do the setup again from ethernet though.. just as you did.

This time do the usual wireless troubleshooting.

1. Change the names for wireless to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Give different names to each band.. and make it clear.. eg TC24ghz and TC5ghz work fine for me.

2. Set to a fixed wireless channel. Wireless channels for 2.4ghz amount to 3.. try each in turn and in this order, 11, 6, 1 all other channels overlap.

For 5ghz test down low 36-40 and up high >150.. the actual channel you choose is not particularly important. 5ghz has low range.

3. Test for a moment with no security. If your clients still cannot pick up an IP then the TC is faulty and needs to go back..

If it works with no security.. then turn on wpa2 personal with the password set to 10-20 characters. Mix of upper and lower case and numerals.. pure alphanumeric though.

LaPastenague, thank you - it's kind of working now, but not correctly?

My Mac does work if I plug it into the ISP router.

I reset the TC and tried everything with the iPad, and the same situation happened again, except the iPad has a different Airport set-up function, and I realized that the TC seems to be broadcasting two signals - both the ISP and it's own. I could not connect to the TC while attempting to do so from my new network, but when I changed it back to the old wireless name, it the iPad connected immediately and let me complete the setup.

I then changed my wireless connection to the new name, and it lost the TC connection again. I put it back to the old wireless name and it quicly reappeared. In the iPad setup, I can see where it says the TC is broadcasting this signal - in both 2.4 gh and 5 - and what channels they are on. I attempted to connect my other devices, and they were only able to reach the TC on the wireless network with the old ISP name. I have no clue if they are picking up the 2.4 or 5 gh channel as Airport does not give me this information.

If I try to connect to the new network name I established, the TC disappears and nothing connects.

I am pretty sure the TC is broadcasting the old ISP signal now as my devices constantly dropped the old ISP connection, and when we use this, everything stays conected.

Now to figure out the naming issue, and how to get everything to connect to 5 gh.

Thank you for all your help, it's much appreciated!

Ok... go back to the start.

What modem do you have? Exact make and model will help.

Is it also a wireless router?

My Mac does work if I plug it into the ISP router.

Perhaps I am not following but if you want to get this running.. please show me the IP of the computer with wireless turned off.. plugged into the modem which you say works.

Then do the same thing .. plug the computer into the TC by ethernet .. does it still work??

A screen shot of the network preferences showing the IP you get on ethernet will help.

As well as screenshots of the airport utility pages for internet and networking and wireless.

Okay, sorry it took me so long to get back with you. I brought down my whole system trying to get this resolved, my cable company was completely clueless, and then I had one of those "doh!", smack my head moments and realized what was wrong.

I connected my computer by ethernet adapter to the ethernet extender, which is why it connected. The TC had been hooked up to the router the whole time in the telephone connection. It apparently was picking up the wireless signal and doing something with it, because there was a signal coming out of it, but it was weak.

Until I brought down the internet connection, I didn't remember installing that ethernet extender. Apparently at one time I knew those other connections were phone jacks, but forgot.

Anyway, it took about 5 minutes to set up the TC now that I've got it in the right connection. So thank you!😊
