itunes has stopped working

Everytime i try to back up my ipod or iphone the message itunes has stopped working appears and forces me to close itunes out. Help on how to fix this

iPhone 5, iOS 4.3.1

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I found this article that goes over what to do if you get the error message that iTunes has stopped responding and needs to be closed. The resolution might apply to your situation:

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

  1. Download the latest version of iTunes here.
  2. Install iTunes by double-clicking the file you download.

If you experience an issue after reinstalling iTunes, completely remove iTunes and reinstall it. For Windows XP, refer to this article. For Windows Vista or Windows 7, see this article.
