Will not remove DRM

My wife and I purchased iTunes match for our Macs for the reason of lifting the DRM restrictions of the songs in our iTunes library because we both got new phones what will not sync or play our music. After running iTunes match on our iTunes libraries on our Macs and then clicking on the cloud on each album and re-downloading each album, our music will still not sync because it is DRM protected. Are we missing a step? Is there something we can do?

If you're primary purpose in purchasing iTunes Match was to remove the DRM (as you state) you will be disappointed. If the DRM restricted songs are not authorized to play on your computer then the tracks will be "uploaded" to the cloud and not "matched." So deleting the originals and downloading them will simply get you the original files back.

You can authorize your computer to play these DRM restricted tracks in iTunes by pulling down Store > Authorize Computer and typing the credentials used to originally purchase the music. If you do not know the Apple ID you can remove the DRM by burning the tracks to an Audio CD and re-import the music.

But iTunes Match will not solve your problem.

To see the status of the tracks in question switch to Song view and Pull down View > View Options. Select the option for iCloud Status and close the small window. There will be a new column in iTunes that will show you the status of the tracks: matched, purchased, uploaded, etc.
