Why does my wifi keep going on and off on my mac?

My dad recently got a macbook air (2013, 10.8.4). I have a 2011 macbook air. My mac can connect to our home's wifi network, and so can all the other devices in our home, but his macbook can't. As in, it connects (or appears to according to the status bar), but the internet doesn't work. So I go to network diagnostics. It always ends up telling me that it's working fine, even though it always starts out by showing that the ISP conenction fails etc. Sometimes it even tells me that the network settings had changed. I restart his computer, the internet works for 1 minute, then it stops working again. I restart the router, it works for 1 minute, then stops working. I even try to access the router's ip address (to log in to the router) via his macbook, but not even that works. I have no idea what to do. Is this a problem with my router, or could it be a problem with his mac?


Any ideas? Any help is appreciated 🙂


Bear in mind that my wifi settings are the same as his (e.g. DNS), and that there are no conflicting ips as far as I know (it uses DHCP). This problem only occurrs on his macbook. Other devices (e.g. iPads, iPhones, my macbook) work.

Try a different channel using AirPort Utility.


Launch AirPort utility then click once on the network name the click Edit. You may be prompted for the network password.


Then select the Wireless tab then click Wireless Options


Select a different channel from the first channel pop up menu then click Save.

New mac book air do have wifi problems to connect to routers i dont know what ur router is bcoz now new air has more faster wifi mean u must hav latest router to match their speed if u got an older then this wont work this why ur dads air doesnt work and ur other 2011 is working bcoz of older wifi u hav on air,its not the same wifi signals 2011 to 2013

His answer is not correct but gives you a workaround in your home. Any laptop, as the MBA, is portable and should of course work also with older non Apple routers. You cant force everybody else to change router! The solution must be to fix the new MBAs, they are defective.

This is a real issue and Apple is working on it but I'm not buying any new MBA until this is resolved. And I recommend everyone to wait as well, and if your unit is defective, return it. Keep the pressure up on Apple, don't reward them by buying a new router to fix a defective laptop.

I never said I was happy with my defective product. I'll get it fixed, just as you said. But I'm far from an apple store at the moment, so his workaround works great for the moment. anth2013's answer told me that there is an issue with the newer macbook airs. That's all I needed to know: whether there was a problem with my router or with my dad's mac. And now I know that my dad's mac is defective. What, do you want me to mark your answer as the right one? If you're really desperate for the "reputation" then FINE, I'll mark your answer as "this solved my question". Just let me know. In fact I don't think I can change it now. His/her "answer" came first and broadly answered my question. I would me more than happy to say that you "helped me".


As for you useless rage, I understand that you're angry with apple, but please direct it elsewhere, because you have no further help to contribute to this post. If you really think that your rage can help people, start your own thread, and stop bothering this thread. There is truly nothing left to contribute to this thread.

I'm not excusing what I think is an Apple software or firmware problem with the wifi. However I'm pretty sure they will fix it eventually, so the question is can you wait? I bought a new Apple router for home and that's the only place I use wifi so I can wait, but others might be so lucky. If you are stuck trying to use wifi (say at work) which you don't control, or you can't afford to throw money at the problem, then there is little choice but to buy another machine.


I suspect Apple will fix this quietly (unless it starts blowing up on all the tech sites) some time soon by an update. This is clearly a bad problem, but I don't think there's anything fundamental wrong with the device. Somebody is having some bad days at Apple though.

I really dont care if someone gets it to work at home by buying a new Apple router, for their stationary MacBook Air.

Most of us by a ultraportable laptop to take it with us to other networks, and we would like it to work without problem everywhere. So I still recommend everyone with a wifi issue to return it, everyone considering buying a MBA to postpone it until Apple fix this.

The solution to a decective laptop cannot be buying a new outer and staying at home with it!

I guess the problem is that your problem hasn't been actually solved - you were wondering why your new Macbook air is not functioning properly with Wifi? Well the proper answer is that it is defective and so the proper solution is to return the laptop or wait for a fix - but there is a temporary solution which is what you have done - buy one of the few routers taht seems to solve the problem - but this is not a full solution, because your problem was NOT caused by your old router but by the macbook air, I would agree with you that if the problem was caused fully by your router then this was the solution - "changing the router" - but this is more like a temporary solution because the problem (your defective macbook) still remains - so I do not want to take credit but I want to say that I wish there was something like "temporarily solved" or something because when you say "Solved" it also indicates that your defective product is no longer defective? Do I make any sense there matteo534? And yes sorry for my outrage, just a bit angry that a reputable company like this can't get something like this right.
