Right button on apple tv remote not working

I had the problem of the right button not working and before it totally stopped working I added my tv remote and have been using it ever since. Recently I restored the Apple TV (been running slow) and forgot about the button not working.

I spent hours trying to pair a Bluetooth keyboard to no avail. I tried downloading keyboard apps. I tried connecting another computer.

Just as I was about to give up I found a fix. Sharing it here in case others need it, as my search brought me here.

I used iTunes on my computer to restore the Apple TV. When the Apple tv started up I used my iPhone to set up the Apple TV as prompted. Then I was on the main menu. At this point I was previously stuck because I could go up and down but not to the right to setup.

I held down the menu button on the first app to rearrange the icons and brought it all the way to the bottom of the screen where it ran out of apps to switch with and went to the next row, and then the next row. There I hit the menu button again to stop moving the icon and the cursor was in the correct row and all I had to do was scroll up to settings. Then I could scroll up and down in settings to pair my tv remote to the Apple TV. From there you can use the tv remote to add the app on iPhone.

How do I unpair it since I can't even reach the settings menu. Is there a way to , I can't use the remote app since the Apple TV is not connected to the wifi. So I need to first figure out a way to reach settings, my remote button only goes top , down and left.

Thanks for verifying that. Given that you've already replaced the battery on the remote (which ultimately resets it) I would try to Unpair the remote and Pair it back. If that doesn't address the issue, then it's most likely a hardware issue with the remote. Hoping that your Apple TV is still under warranty, I'd contact Apple for replacement (they make ask you to go through the same troubleshooting steps). Or you can buy one yourself, they're going around $20.

I have this exact same problem. I had the remote app on my iphone connected to it, but then with the update to the iphone a few months back, it over wrote the connection on my phone so I can't use that to do it anymore. How can you go to the right on the Apple TV menu if the remote won't go to the right? Ugh.
