Selected text not highlighted

When selecting text, I drag normally across the word/s and this is shown as selected by being highlighted. Then I can perform operations such as cut, copy, paste etc on the selection.

When using Safari today I find that the selected text isn't highlighted giving, wrongly, the impression it isn't selected. But copy, cut, paste etc work as normal. I then found that this problem was not confined to Safari but was the same in Word, Pages, Excel and even the Finder.

I opened the Mouse control panel and as I did the selected text became highlighted. But bringing the application to the front instead of the control panel made the highlighting disappear!! This could be repeated. Control panel as front window highlight visible in Safari behind frontmost window, application (Safari) at front highlight not visible. See https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4198612/PreviewScreenShot002.png

  • Tried several restarts but it didn't the solve problem.
  • Tried resetting PRAM but it didn't solve problem.

Even in typing this message the highlighting doesn't appear visible. To add bullets above I selected the two line (no highlights) and presses the bullet button.

Anyone else experiencing the same problem? Anyone got a fix?

Regards

David Barr

Hi Barney,

Yes, I could run the read command and get back the AppleHighlightColour as "0.780400 0.815700 0.858800" but it didn't take affect until I restarted the Mac.

The normal highlighting is NOW BACK!

Thank you for your help, its much appreciated. I didn't realise that the return from the command

defaults read -g | grep AppleHighlightColor

of

AppleHighlightColor = "1.000000 1.000000 1.000000";

meant the highlight colour was WHITE.

Its clear now. I was selecting text correctly and the Mac was highlighting in white on a white background giving me the impression that its wasn't highlighted at all.

So would the command

defaults write -g AppleHighlightColour "0.780400 0.815700 0.858800"

also have fixed the problem?

Thanks again for your help.

David

To get to your user library, hold down the option key while using the Finder Go To Folder command. Enter what Barney typed above.

If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.

http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/

You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

Jul 6, 2013 2:03 PM in response to Barney-15E

Hi Barney,

I found a command to change the AppleHighlightColor:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleHighlightColour "0.780400 0.815700 0.858800" resets the parameter to the default Grey.

I've done this but the problem still remains. I can see highlighted text in all windows except the frontmost. With several documents in several applications open, each with highlighted text and with windows arranged to see all on screen, only the frontmost window fails to show the highlighted text. As each window is brought to the front in turn the previously highlighted text becomes un-highighted.

Regards

David

After you set the color with that command, does it stick? i.e. can you run the read command and get back the changed color or do you get all 1's?

All 1's is White highlight.

BTW, -g is NSGlobalDomain

These are the things that are loaded at startup, or when any user logs in, but I don't know why any of them would affect the highlight.

Of those, I don't have Ambrosia, dymo, or the Adobe CS and AAM stuff.

defaults write -g AppleHighlightColour "0.780400 0.815700 0.858800"

also have fixed the problem?

Based on what you stated, yes. I suppose it also might have been fixed just by chaninging the highligh color in General System Prefs.

However, sometimes preference lists get corrupted and can't be written to (either permission issues or actual file corruption).

Did you use AppleHighlightColor or AppleHighlightColour when you sent that command? I wouldn't think that plist would be localized.
