My email inbox indicates 4 unread messages. I have searched and don't see any unread messages. The same email account shows no unread messages on my computer and my iPad. Specific to phone. Thanks

Which provider? iCloud mail or f.e. Gmail, Hotmail?
If at all possible, try to delete your account from Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar and add it after a fresh reboot. Should solve it.

It's outlook. I'm afraid to reset the account
Don't be. Outlook.com is an all-cloud service and your e-mails are preserved with Outlook, rather than on your iPhone.
Delete and re-add the account on your iPhone and everything should be fine.
