Can no longer send message from Ipad mini but can receive fix?

My ipad mini was able to send and receive messages. For some reason it now only receives messages. I can type message but when I hit the send, it just sits there with no message to see what the problem is. I only send between Iphone Ipad people so there is no other strange hardware involved. I have the first and last buttons turned on...so I changed it and didn't get a different result. Can someone help me. I do use my apple ID as the account. Somehow I got the message "Cannot connect to the imessage server" but haven't seen that again in my settings.
