What if my contact can see me but not hear me?

This is my first attempt to use facetime. I set up my facetime account, and my nephew called me. He can see me, and I can both see and hear him. But he cannot hear me. The mute button is NOT on on my facetime screen. I'm clearly doing something wrong, but I don't know what.
