Does blank DVD brand matter? Why?

I have just started burning DVDs for the first time on my PowerBook (bought Oct. 2003) and found that Maxell 2X blank DVDs work fine, but HP 8X blanks do not--my drive spins them around for 30 seconds and pops them out. Why? Someone gave me a stack of the HPs, and I would like to use them. I have a TOSHIBA MK4025GAS superdrive on my PowerBook.

In answer to the original post, yes, unfortunately, DVD blank media doesn't all behave the same. If you do a google/yahoo search, you'll come up with pages and pages of discussion on the different brands, and who manufactures them. I've had good luck with TDK DVD blanks, which you can find on sale at Circuit City fairly regularly.

MeganJR welcome to the discussions.
Unfortunatlly there is a huge difference in MEDIA.
Here is a link that gives a breakdown of all the major brands and tells what the author considers the best.

There are several different problems that raise there ugly head and some are hard to sort out, DRIVE(Optical) MEDIA, SOFTWARE, all of which can be the cause of problems.
I strongly suggest you use good media. the above link is a good guidr to use.
Good Luck Don
