Q: cannot startup after update 10.8.4

Hi, I am using MacBook Pro 4.1, so far it is running fine. Just had installed the latest update and restarted couple days ago, it continuously rebooted. I tried to reinstall the OS 10.6. It works fine but the same issue happened once I reinstalled 10.8.4. Could someone help?

MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

I'm not sure what the site is, but I think you should search for which models can use 10.8, because not all models can run Mac OS X 10.8.

OS X Mountain Lion system requirements

To install Mountain Lion, you need one of these Macs:

    • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
    • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
    • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
    • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
    • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    • Xserve (Early 2009)

So your mac is supposed to be compatible with Mt.Lion: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5444

How did you reinstall Mt. Lion?

Did you first upgrade to 10.6.8? And then downloaded the Installer from the AppStore?

And what happens, when the mac reboots? Do you see any error messages? A corrupted screen?

Can you boot into Safe Mode? See: Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

I have checked the requirements before download and i have used since launched year ago. So far is fine.

I have first upgraded to 10.6.8 (this is the only way to get AppStore) then downloaded the installer of Mt. Lion.

    You are quick, Larry.

I edited my post and added a few questions:

And what happens, when the mac reboots? Do you see any error messages? A corrupted screen?

Can you boot into Safe Mode? See: Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

If you can get the your mac to boot in Sfe Mode, look for the logs in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

Are there recent logs from the crashes at start up?

It is just non-stop reboot while the apple logo and the spinning gear appear a while. Sometimes it showed a multi-language message about "an error appears during startup, the system will restart couple seconds later or press any key to retart". No, I did not try to logon safe mode.

That looks like a kernel panic.  See this:

         OS X: About kernel panics

Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic

You may have installed incompatible kernel extensions, or is your current installation a clean install?

No, I did not try to logon safe mode.

Try that, please. It may let you log in and you may be able to look for log files in the Console window.

The log files are stored here. /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

The current installation is clean install. I eased all data, system and reinstalled again.

I logged in safe boot successfully and found the following from DiagnosticReports:

Interval Since Last Panic Report:  32 sec

Since it booted into the Safe Mode, there could be 3rd party software installed that is causing the problem. Anti-virus software, MacKeeper, and others can cause problems. If you have anything like that, remove it using the developers instructions.

If a clean install is giving you Kernel panics, I'd run a Hardware Test. Do you still have the install disks that came with your Mac?

there shouldn't be 3rd parties problem as it is a clean install.

the Hardware Diagnostics of System Profiler does not show any error. I still have install disks came with my Mac.

To run the test from the install disks:

    1. Disconnect all external devices except the keyboard, mouse, display, and speakers. If you have an Ethernet cable or external DVD drive, disconnect it.
    2. Insert the system software disc or USB flash drive.
    3. Restart your computer, holding down the D key while the computer restarts.
    4. When the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen appears, select the language you want to use, and then press the Return key or click the right arrow button.
    5. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow the onscreen instructions.
