Jul 7, 2013 11:53 AM in response to TGJ14by BDAqua,Hello,
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.
Mail: Can't send messages, "Cannot send message using the server smtp.xxxxx.com" alert appears...

Jul 7, 2013 12:48 PM in response to BDAquaby TGJ14,Hi,
Thanks so much for responding. I get a red dot against btinternet SMTP (green dots for btinternet.com Account Yahoo! IMAP, Hotmail SMTP and Hotmail .co.uk) The message against btinternet SMTP is
"Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the SSL checkbox in the Advance tab of Account Preferences"
I clicked the show details button and checked again and got 4 pages of technical stuff which is, I am afraid, gobbledegook to me....(see below)
Any thoughts?

The Password rejection can confuse people since it's a catch all meaning...
This Password, Username, Authentication method... is not recognized on this Port to this Server, more than one entry in Keychain for each in/out entry, or a server end problem.
If using a browser to login via WebMail works it's not Name or Password, but one of the other ones.
The receiving email ports are:
IMAP is port 143
IMAP-SSL is port 993
POP is port 110
POP-SSL is port 995
Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.

Jul 7, 2013 1:17 PM in response to BDAquaby TGJ14,Hi again BDAqua,
Sorry but being a new user I don't know how to "post". Sorry to be so pathetic and maybe you can't read this either!

Jul 7, 2013 1:32 PM in response to BDAquaby TGJ14,Hi,
No idea if BT is POP, but then I dont really know what Post Office proptoco; means. Yes it has worked absolutely fine for over a year and was set up in line with the instructions shown on the link you kindly gave me. I am afraid the rest of your email was too specialised for me. Are you saying the outgoing mail is using the wrong port?

Jul 7, 2013 1:59 PM in response to TGJ14by BDAqua,My first guess is a problem on BT/Yahoo's end, quite common.
Did you try Webmail sending from a browser?

Jul 7, 2013 2:01 PM in response to TGJ14by BDAqua,No, it isn't your fault, just occasionally here the forum won't show the last post, despite it showing in the header & having a link that goes nowhere.

Jul 7, 2013 3:11 PM in response to BDAquaby TGJ14,Hi again.
I really appreciate you taking time over this. I did try BT yesterday who said it wasn't their problem and I'm inclined to agree as I can access full functionality via a browser and, perhaps more significantly, from my ipad not via a browser. Mystery eh? Thanks for your note about posts too by the way.

Jul 7, 2013 3:45 PM in response to TGJ14by BDAqua,Mail works significantly different in iOS & OSX, might try different SMTP ports, but did you try Webmail sending on your Mac?

Jul 7, 2013 3:47 PM in response to TGJ14by BDAqua,You may have multiple entries in Keychain.
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, enter the part after the @ sign in the search bar, hit enter.
Use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
But with no red dots in Connection Doctor???

Jul 8, 2013 12:08 AM in response to BDAquaby TGJ14,Hi again,
First, webmail sending on my mac works fine.
I did get a red dot in connection doctor against btinternet. I might have confused you with references to green dots too. What I said was I get a red dot against btinternet SMTP (green dots for btinternet.com Account Yahoo!
You will despair of me but I am not sure what part I should enter after the @ sign in the search bar in utilities. Do you mean btinternet.com? It says No results found if I type that.
I do wonder though if this isn’t where the problem lies. I do from time to time get asked to verify passwords for mail and often the application as a whole fails to close and I have to use force quit.
Oh dear. Quite understand if you decide to give up on this!

Jul 8, 2013 1:28 AM in response to TGJ14by BDAqua,Naw, I don't give up easily... or because neither of us understand what's happening!
I'd think btintrnet shoild be there , but try a search for mail, or smtp
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

Jul 10, 2013 12:03 PM in response to BDAquaby TGJ14,so sorry for the radio silence, I was begining to lose the will to live. HOWEVER, your reference to keychains made me think more about passwords. I checked the BT internet help site again today and lo and behold there was a service status message about general problems sending and receiving emails which has been ongoing since 14 June! It wasnt there before and why didnt they tell me this when I rang them up??!! Their answer was
Estimated time to resolve: Ongoing
If you are having problems sending or receiving email, you must change your password at www.bt.com/changepassword
Changing passwords online is quick and secure. We will only change your password over the phone in exceptional circumstances.
We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
So I changed my password this afternoon and fingers crossed it seems to be working on the imac! But now, even though I have changed the password in settings to the new one, the ipad has begun to play up saying the username or password for SMTP and my email address is incorrect. I will play around with it and I will get there I'm sure. Thanks for all your help and support
