I just purchased a 24" iMac A1225 without a hard drive. Can I transfer the drive from my old 17" iMac, with OS 10.68 installed on it, or do I have to clone, migrate or reinstall?

If you can access to the 17-inch iMac, open > About this Mac > More Info, and copy Model Identifier here. This will help us in order to know which iMac you have and if you can install its hard drive onto the 24-inch iMac.
If your 17-inch iMac was purchased in 2006 or later, you shouldn't have any problem using its hard drive. If not, you can try getting an enclosure

You could, but it would be far better to put a new Hard Drive into the 24" iMac, instead of that well worn drive from your older iMac.
Then use the same Retail 10.6 Upgrade DVD that you used to upgrade the 17" to setup the new drive and either clone or install a fresh OS X.

I replaced the original drive a few months ago with a a 2TB drive from Western Digital so I don't think I need a new drive. Thanks for your help.

Aha OK then, that should work fine.
The only snag might be, if your missing the original thermal sensor from the original 24" Hard Drive.
Then again, you should be able to use the one that came from the original 17" Hard Drive.
