hi! hooked up my new macbook pro to my LGE2442 monitor using a MDP to HDTV cable and the monitor resolution is terrible. suggestions? thanks!

Male sure Mirroring is off in Displays system preference Arrangement tab. Set the resolution to 1080p (1920 x 1080 60 Hz). No external display s going to have Retina resolution.
As Malcolm said, Mirror set to off. Mirror mode puts same image on both screens and will use the lesser of the two resolutions for both. If not in mirror mode you can select different images and resolutions for both.
