Which carrier are you trying to use on the phone? Where are you located and where did you purchase the phone? Are you trying to use a supported carrier for the phone. Do you know where the SIM tray is located? Did your carrier provide you with a SIM?

You need to provide a little more information.

AT&T is my carrier, in RI, can't text, can't call, go onto Safari, get emails?  Happens once in a while for a few minutes.  Today it wouldn't work at all.  I am home now and have wireless and it won't pick up that signal either.

I don't know about SIMor where it is located. I was a blackberry girl for years.  This phone is only a few weeks old, bought at Apple Store in Providence RI, they didn't tell me about SIM.  It has worked fine till today.

    Thank you.

If you are on AT&T, you have a SIM. If you purchased from Apple store and set up your AT&T there, then the SIM was installed. Try the information in the support document that I provided you and see if that helps. One other thing is you can take it into AT&T and they can provide you with a new SIM if necessary.

Thank you very much.  I tried looking for updates, but keeps telling me not connected to internet. No SIM installed.  I will take it there tomorrow.  Didn't realize they can go bad, so quickly.  Thanks again.

It is not normal, but it can happen. With no SIM error, you are not going to be able to do anything on the phone without being connected to wifi. With that, you will be able to do data, such as email or Safari.

Have you done any other user troubleshooting? How about a reset, hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release the buttons. The phone will restart. Does the phone recognizse the SIM now?
