Recording my sax, clarinet, flute on GB/with music-minus-one-type CDx

Just getting started with garage band.

Primary goal:

To record myself (saxophones, clarinets, flutes)

1) with pre-existing tunes from CDs. (If any of you are familiar with Jamie Aebersold or Hal Leonard jazz CDs (providing the rhythm section) that's the kind of stuff I'd like to use;

2) and create my own accompaniments with Garage Band, Band-in-a-Box.

Regarding goal #1, can I do this? Looks like I should be able to import an Aebersold tune, for example, but what about tune length? His tunes are usually about 5-7 minutes long. Open to any and all suggestions on this.

Regarding goal #2, can I change chords using GarageBand? For example, to create a 12-bar blues, I'd need to at least use the I, IV and V7 chords. Or, could I change the chord on every beat, say in 4-4 time? I do not see how this could be done. If it can't, of what use is GarageBand except to possibly add a little percussion to existing tunes.

Finally, do I need a pre-amp to live record my horns? Suggestions?

As I said, just getting started with GB. I do have a book and an on-screen tutorial. But any advice any of you would be willing to share would be very much appreciated.

By the way, I'm not exactly a computer wiz. Not a neanderthal either. somewhere in between.

thank you

Yes, you can import songs that you RIP yourself from CDs
2) and create my own accompaniments with Garage Band,
Band-in-a-Box.

That's how The Leader originally pitched GB when it was first released, so yes.

what about tune length?

You can change the pitch of Audio & MIDI Loops in semitones, and you can re-write/re-arrange notes in MIDI tracks.

Yes:
