Can she still use it? well... technically yes, but there are increasing bugs and security issues,

Perhaps if she explained what these "bugs" are, someone could help her resolve them.

I'm beginning to see the issue of "outdated hardware" with the release of iOS 7. Many users are stating here on the forums (of course, not everyone) that their older, less capable devices like the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 (minimum hardware for iOS 7) are having trouble keeping up with the demands of iOS 7. This is inevitable and I feel for those in this situation. As it stands today, I myself am not updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 7 for this very reason (I don't feel like jeopardizing my fully working device to test it and see). Hopefully, the older versions of apps compatible with older iOS versions will be more readily available (this is supposedly happening) and the user's of older hardware will be able to continue using their devices for a greater period of time.

i bought my ipad day 1 ....... what makes me mad is that not only is IOS6/7 not supported, but it looks like there is no support for IOS5. There are many different websites that crash when using Safari, I start Safari backup and the site crashes again. At this point, its time to find another browser.

I bought my iPad 1 when iPad 2 came out as it was a good price for the storage, which means I've only had it for 2.5 years. I expected it to last longer!

Safari and App Store is constantly crashing. I've closed any unclosed apps, I've rebooted, I've cleared history and cookies - still crashes.

We pay a lot of money for these products, I bought mine to replace my Windows laptop which I now have to use if want to look at any web page with a lot of photos as that seems to be a trigger. The laptop is FOUR years old! Now I'm stuck with an expensive iPad which I can't afford to replace which doesn't do what I bought it for anymore.

To get it to an Apple store I have to drive 30 miles, I dont want to do that if I'm going to get there and they say "can't do anything about that I'm afraid"!.

    Not good enough.

My iPad 1 still works fine with 5.1.1 installed. What's the problem?

Try taking an old IBM 386 and installing Windows 8 on it.  As software becomes more advanced and more powerful it needs more powerful hardware to run it.  I have used Apple for over 30 years now, and have many issues with them, but this is silly.  What you seem to want is Apple not to innovate new and advanced software/Operating Systems so your old hardware can work.  That's nonsensical.

I think the differences is that my 386 still runs dos, windows and ms word and has never prompted me to upgrade. My iPad updates my apps and then tells me they won't work unless I update the operating system, which I can't do. Utter rubbish........

Your iPad doesn't force you to upgrade apps (untile iOS 7), so that is your fault.

Your 386 probably won't run Photoshop 3, let alone the latest version.

and your iPad one will still run the apps it came with.  Try installing Office 2013 on your 386 and see how that goes. You don't have to upgrade your apps on the iPad.

This response is to all who think they are intelligent by posting dumb comparisons. The problem we "customers" are facing is, that the devices we paid a ton of money for and that works great at the most basic level needs to be thrown out the window because the apps designed for the so called amazing iPad experience no longer work. These are apps that people like me paid good money for. No one is asking Apple to stop innovating or asking Apple to replace our iPad1 with the latest and greatest device on the market. What we are asking for is continued app support for a minimum of 6 to 8 years of all apps that were made available to the original iPad. I sees that some of the app developers are using a means of recognizing the iPad OS / Hardware version before attempting to install the iOS7 version of the app. Big oven is an example of this process where they say that they recognize that the version I have is old and here is a version we have for with updates that you can install which supports your iPad version. We (the owners of the original iPad) are asking that we get continued support of the apps we have installed, in the fashion that Big Oven is supporting their app across all iPad models . It's unfortunate to see a genuine conversation get dragged into nonsense .

Also we update our apps just like anyone else to receive fixes to bugs and possible security updates, so the statement that anyone is at fault for updating their apps that cause the apps to crash soon after, is not valid. If there is an update I want it cause that update could solve a problem I'm having with that app currently.

It's a fact of life with all technology - your desktop, tablet, laptop, phone, cable box, etc. They eventually lose support and must be updated. Why is this such a big deal? If you want to keep a device for 8 years, don't upgrade anything and it should remain usable.

My very first mac (512k) still "works", but I don't find it useful for anything. I accept that. My iPad 1 works and it's still useful.

Yes my iPad 'works' but it crashes whenever I want to look at any pages with lots of pictures on.

You sound like you're trying to insult our intelligence???

Ok let's put it this way: 2009 I paid £299 for my Windows laptop. It crashes if I don't update it regularly.

2011 I bought an iPad 1 for £399 expecting it to serve me well for at least the same time as the laptop. I can still update the laptop. I can no longer update the iPad. Get it?

The 'Genius' suggested to me I either buy ANOTHER (refurbished) iPad 1 for £200 or buy a new one. Thanks for that, 'expert'. Oh and I had to drive 30 miles each way to get that advice.

IT IS NOT OUR FAULT that Apple decide that our product (which served perfectly well until the last update) is obsolete and cannot keep in touvpch with the updates.

IT IS NOT OUR FAULT that we were amazed with the technology that comes with a reputation like Apples to be fooled off with rubbish excuses after 2.5yrs of owning their product.

Why shouldn't we be able to update our products? That's what we bought them for!

Since we are all about examples and comparisons today:

So what you're saying is, death is a part of life and if there is a cure for a fatal disease and the caveat is that I have to be under 5 years old to consume the medicine that cures me, then I wouldn't force the drug companies to innovate a cure for people like me over 5 years old but rather accept death as an understood destination to my life?

We all want the maximum out of everything, these days not all of us can afford to go after the next iPad that ships out.
