Smart Cover & Notifications

I saw a few old threads on this but I wanted to revive it! When my iPad smart cover is closed I don't receive notifications until I open the cover. Once I open it I get a flood of notifications. Is there a way to change that? I have messed with the settings a hundred times and can't get it to change unless I just turn off the smart cover turn off feature but that isn't what I want, I still want to get notifications even when the cover is closed with the smart turn off feature turned on.
