So as the question states i've been having troubles getting them on, they don't even show up in home videos, I rename them to get rid of extra "." and other symbols so it's just letters and .mp4. could that be why they aren't going on? Because they're ".mp4".? I really need a quick fix, I need them for a very long plane flight.

Im afraid to tell you that the reason should be the ".mp4" file extension as itunes can support limited video format. Though you can find it may support MP4 as well. However, it supports the H.264 encoding MP4 file. In this case, you may try to convert MP4 files to iTunes first and it may be the fastest way for you if you do want to play those videos with no trouble. try a video converter and i do hope it can help you a lot now and in the future~
