Why can't iTunes see my music when I try to add files from my computer?

Why can't iTunes see my music when I try to add files from my computer? I have a PC & can see it in my computer, but all my music folders look emptry from within iTunes. I had no trouble when I initially installed iTunes a few months ago, but after an update, I couldn't add anything to my library. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but still can't add files to iTunes. Help!
