Yes, if your iMac is turned on, and if you set it up for remote access.
It is on and it is enabled for screen sharing with a password for the vnc
you need to configure your internet router to allow access from over the internet to your hole LAN. If you haven't done that then you can't connect to it.
I think it may have been done, is there a way to confirm?

But, I do not have access to the mac that I want to connect to right now, can I get onto it with some software and the router ip address?
The only way to confirm the router is setup to allow access to your Mac at home is to log onto that router. The only way to do that is from a computer on that LAN, in your home, or if you setup remote access to the router on the router.

Oh, I don't think that I setup remote access to the router, so thanks for the help. What is the best program to use if I have someone at the location where the Mac is that can set something up for me?
To access any router, except a Apple Airport, you use a Web browser. Any browser will do.
Hello, I now have someone at home that can do anything I need to help me setup the remote desktop, could someone walk me through it? I am using a mac book pro and I want to control an iMac.
I can't help you with Mac to Mac, other then it is done with screen sharing. But you can't use the Microsoft Remote Desktop app to connect from Mac to Mac. that only works for Mac or PC to(>) Win PC.
On the router you have to forward whatever port the screen sharing system uses to the IP address of the Mac you want to connect to on your home LAN.
I'd start with a google search for "Connect from Mac to Mac over the internet for screen sharing".
