Building a fusion drive or ssd + hdd

Hi,

What will the difference be between building a fusion drive 256gb ssd + 500 gb hdd, or using the same hardware with OS on the SSD and home folder on the HDD. Will there be a difference in performance?

There may be. The Fusion Drive setup will dynamically move frequently used items to the SSD portion so it is accessed faster. For the second setup you mentioned, anytime home folder contents is accessed you will experience slower loading times.

As for real-world performance, the difference may in fact not be so dramatic, but this depends on your specific uses.

It would be interesting to find out how much of the Fusion drive's mojo is purely custom-hardware-based and how much is aided by the OS guesstimating what to prefetch into the SSD side of things. But doubt Apple would let is know much of the magick sauce, even as Developers. Cause as I understand as per the info available, can't see how you can build a homebrew "Fusion" that can equal or outsmart the real deal.

But then, shouldn't this discussion be on the iMac or Mac mini forums? Haven't heard that a MBP carry a kosher Fusion drive.
