Upgrade ios system on iphone 3gs

I have an iPhone 3gs running on ios 4.1. I want to upgrade the ios so that I can start using some of the apps that are available. However I have been advised by an Orange support person (Orange is my carrier and I bought the phone from them some years ago) that the hardware of the 3gs is probably not advanced enough for the latest v6 of the ios. From looking through this forum it does appear thay many people have had problems with battery life, slow system, phone overheating, when they have upgraded their 3gs to v6. The suuport person said it might be possible to upgrade to 5 from the Apple site but I can't find anyway of doing this.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Tony

I followed your link and also the libk to update from ios4 to 5 above and on that Apple page here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972 it says "

Summary

To update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from iOS 4 to iOS 5 or later, you must erase and restore your device first, before completing the update."

But it doesn't seem to say how to do that, just talks about backing up on iTunes?

Any help?

Thanks

Tony

Whoa! Someone took the sun out of your life!

If you had READ my post I quoted the content of the summary from page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972 because it says " you must erase and restore your device first" yet the step by step instructions as you call them don't mention "erasing" anywhere just backing up and restoring from iTunes. I've gone to that page as it specifically talks about updating from ios 4 to a later ios.

Now you may know what they mean by erase in this instance but I was just asking the question as I've never done that before. If I've missed it then I apologise.

This forum, like many others I belong to is normally full of extremely helpful and patient people and we are very lucky that that is the case. However I find your reply arrogant, self opinionated and pre-judgemental. You know nothing about me or my ability and I find your inference that I'm incapable of using an iPhone downright insulting>

If that's all I'm going to get from this forum, I'll stick with ios4 and invest in a Samsung when I can afford it.

End of story!

As already stated, do not read or worry about what the summary says.

Read and follow the step by step instructions. This is not difficult.

The link I posted previously specifically addressed how to update from any version of iOS to the current version of iOS and says nothing about needing to erase and restore the device.

So why do you insist on using the document that is no longer valid is it specifically references updating from iOS 4 to iOS 5 (which cannot happen).

No you learn to READ this is exactly what it says on the page you quoted:

Update your device using iTunes

  1. Ensure that you're using the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Connect your device to your computer using the included USB cable.
  3. After iTunes opens, select your device when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
  4. Click "Check for Update" in the Summary pane to check for available updates.

  5. If an update is available, iTunes prompts you to download and install the update. Do not disconnect your device until the update has finished.
