Updating the OS will not remove any apps, so you need to check out what went wrong there.

Where did you get iPhoto from? Is that a recent Mac? If so you can re-download it from the App Store. It'll be on your Purchases list.

iPhoto came pre-installed on my 2009 iMac. When I go to the App Store I am now required to pay to reinstall the app.

If your Mac came with System Restore disks then install from those.

If it didn't then if you log into the App Store with the ID you used to set up the machine then you can re-install the app for free.
