why won't my apple devies show up on my mac os x v 10.8?

I just bought an Imac and it's able to recognise almost any non-apple device (except my zune), but not my ipad or ipod touch. When I look through the forums I see that Itunes become part of the resolution. Can't the Imac find my device with out Itunes? I mean shouldn't I get an icon for my ipad and ipod on the right side of my desktop like the rest of my mobile devices? This way I should be able to simply access my apple devices with out Itunes. Please help.

Thanks

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), ipod touch and ipad both fourth gen

Nope, those two devices are not supposed to show up on your desktop.

To sync it, you use itunes.

You can get pictures off of it by opening iphoto or image capture.

There are 3rd party apps that allow a very limited access to the file system. See this article, at the bottom of the list if you need to do this for some reason: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
