What is this intermittent warning sound on a Macbook Pro?

This morning my Macbook started to make a warning or alert sound that sounds somewhat musical like da-da-dee-dah. It happens every few minutes but there is no alert message to go with it. And... this is just me griping... but why on earth doesn't Apple have an explanation of these sounds anywhere on their site? Sigh! Does anyone here know what this could mean? I have a Macbook Pro probably from 2010 and recently upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard (which I never had a problem with). Oh, and since upgrading everything runs much slower (in case that's related).

MacBook and imac, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Take a look at calendar maybe you have an alarm set.

I do have a calender item set but it is not that type of alert. I use calender all the time and have checked to make sure I didn't change anything. That's not it. But thanks for trying!

It's not a start-up alert so those links don't cover it. The machine was left on overnight which is not unusual and hasn't been a problem before.

Aak! I solved my own problem and it's an embarrassing one! The warning sound wasn't coming from the Mac but from the cell phone sitting behind it. The battery died and I had never heard the alert sound for that before. I shall slink away quietly now... Thanks for trying!
