Keyboard shortcut for crop aspect ratio?

Hi everybody,

I have a lot of wedding photos which I have to crop in different manners: Some of them in landscape 16:9, the next in portrait 2:3, the next is a landscape format which I want to crop in a portrait 2:3 and so on.

I always have to type C for the croptool and then select the aspect ratio with the mousepointer, which is very inefficient.

Is there or are there any shortcuts on the keyboard where I can predefine a certain aspect ratio? Does the automator help maybe (I'm not used to it)?

Thanks and regards from Germany,

Frank

Hi Frank,

Not that I know of.

You should have several standards built-in:

The following workflow may help:

- Use a Light-table to sort your Images into piles of Images to be similarly cropped

- Create an Album from each pile

- Select the Album and crop each Image without closing the Crop tool. I use the "3-up" Viewer for this ("View➞Main Viewer➞Three Up"), as it let's me see the last crop when I move on to the next. If you use Split View (which is independent of the Main Viewer setting) you can see a thumbnail of the crop live, before you close the Crop tool or select the next Image.

Perhaps someone more knowledge will jump in and tell me I'm wrong, but I'm afraid you might be disappointed in what Automator (and AppleScript) have to offer. The only image adjustments exposed in Automator are the ability to apply an image adjustment preset to an image version. But since you can't save any crop information in a preset, there's no way to apply crop adjustments.

One alternative approach would be to use a keystroke macro program like Keyboard Maestro to emulate your mouse clicks. But that approach comes with it's own set of pitfalls and quirks.

Here's hoping the Aperture developers fix the whole cropping feature set in the next version. It is in need of a major overhaul, for the reasons you describe along with many others.
