I try to download free apps to my iPad but it sends me straight to my debit card info on my iPad but it won't let me download cause my debit card has no money on it right now. What does that have to do with a free app. Nothing at all that''s what.nothing.

In the U.S., debit cards are no longer accepted as a form of payment. Since you did enter a payment method at one point, you must now update payment information - unless you are able to select None - as the payment method in your iTunes account.

Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID>View Apple ID>Enter your Passowrd>Payment Information. See if you have a "None" option in there.

How to Get Apps From the App Store Without a Credit Card

Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card

If None is not available - On your computer launch iTunes and click "iTunes Store" in the left navigation pane. Click the "down arrow" next to your name at the top right side of the page and click "Account." Enter your username and password and click "View Account" to log into your account information. Next to your Payment Type, click "Edit." Select the "None" button and click "Done." Confirm that your card has been removed by returning to the Apple account information screen. Under Payment Type, it should say that there is no credit card on file.

Credit Cards or Debit Cards

Troubleshooting credit card & debit card payment errors

If your card is new or recently reissued, make sure it has been activated.

Double check the card type (for example, American Express), the account number and expiration date.

Remove dashes or spaces from the account number.

If everything seems to be correct, call the card issuer's customer service 800 number on the back of your card. Your credit card company may need to speak with you before they authorize your purchase.

Well then I stand corrected.

However, I have read from a few other users that they could no longer use a debit card, and according to this, debit cards are not listed. I realize that the keyword here is "typically" but I assumed that debit cards would be listed if they were accepted forms of payment.

Accepted payment types

You need an Apple ID to buy items in the iTunes Store, Mac App Store, App Store and iBookstore. When you create an Apple ID for any of these stores, you will need to provide a payment method for purchases. The available payment methods vary by country, but typically you can use:

  • Credit cards
  • iTunes Cards
  • iTunes Store Gift Certificates
  • Content Codes
  • Store credit (including Allowance Account balances)
  • ClickandBuy
  • PayPal

In countries where the iTunes Store only sells apps, the accepted payment methods are Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Other payment types such as gift cards, store credit, monthly allowances, ClickandBuy, and PayPal are not accepted. Depending on your App Store country, prices may be listed in your local currency, US Dollars, or Euros.
