External trackpad with macbook

I have an early 2008 macbook. I'm currently running lion but the trackpad on my macbook is not multi-touch. I was wondering, if i got an external trackpad that was multi-touch would I be able to do the three finger drag and everything else that lion offers? If I can, will it only work on a magic trackpad that apple makes, or any multi-touch trackpad?
