something wrong with user? numbers, pages, preview do not open

Hi comunity,

I am facing the following problem and have figured so far that it must be user related as it does not show up when signing in as guest user:

Numbers, pages, preview do not open anymore plus after restarting, the iMac always comes up with the same programs and windows no matter if I have closed them before shuttting the computer down and allthough they are NOT marked as 'open automatically upon starting'.

For example: safari always opens the same windows, allthough I have closed them and haven't used them. I have tried to empty the cache and to reset safari, but as soon as I restart the iMac safari comes up with the same old windows.

Only two things have happened that I could imagine being related with this:

* I have started working with iCloud for numbers and pages documents - unlikely I guess

* we have used a streaming service in order to stream TV program via the iMac onto our TV set - maybe that interferes with the iMac software?

* also once the iMac broke down and I had to force restart. Usually it simply starts with my user and settings, without me needing to sign in. But that time I had to sign in with my user name & password.

Hope you guys can help me with that. Guess by now you can tell that I am not an expert ;-)

Thanks a lot!

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Try Recovery Mode and repair your hard drive and follow up with a Safe Boot.

Make sure you have backups. TimeMachine and bootable clone backups.

Your best place would be Mac OS Mountain Lion Community.

Recovery Mode

Safe Mode, (holding Shift key down at bootup; takes longer to boot this way so be patient), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
