my mac 10.7.5 is beginning to slow down. I hardly ever saw the little revolving wheel, now it occurs very often. I see software listed on the internet clean up and speed up the system but am afraid to use without some recomentations.

What to do when your computer is too slow
Do NOT use/install "software to clean up and speed up". These make things worse always.
The reason can be a disk that is not fit anymore, too less disk space, too less memory, apps running that you do not need, antivirus apps, antimalware apps, etc.
