    Kate,

I noticed some other "crapware" you have installed.

Rapport is incompatible with both OS X and Safari.

    Completely uninstall this software, also.

Instructions for removing it are here:

Uninstalling Rapport on Mac OS X | Trusteer

Also see this link about Rapport not playing well with Macs.

Me again.  Sorry I had to crash last night was really exhausted.  Answers to your questions:  the only software I downloaded after Photoshop was working fine was CleanMyMac.  There is no dot in the center of the Spotlight.  I uninstalled Rapport thois morning. I had installed it on the advice of my online banking account.

CleanMyMac has been known to remove system components that must not be removed. I know of no way to restore them other than to reinstall OS X.

Trusteer Rapport is garbage also. If you want your Mac to be reliable never install such junk. If your bank requires it take your business to another bank and tell them the reason you're leaving.

I cant reinstall OS X without having to reinstall all my apps and do a full backup, right? I am on 10.6.8.  If I upgrade to a new OS will that solve the problem of missing system components?  What should I upgrade to?  I am hearing Mountain Lion is causing problems with Firefox and other things.

BTW...maybe I should introduce myself.  I was a system software eng manger on System 7.  My team created TrueType.

Yes. Just be aware that it will not remove or disable any software you installed. You have to do that yourself.

Snow Leopard to Lion or ML is a big leap. Don't expect an upgrade to fix anything, but for what it's worth Firefox works perfectly OK.

Many older programs will not work. Anything written for the PowerPC will not even load since Rosetta support is gone after Snow Leopard. Etrecheck is likely to reveal troublesome system modifications; at this point CleanMyMac stands out as the most obvious one.

I removed entrecheck and havent loaded any PowerPC apps that I know of.  Google Earth, Firefox, Bento, Photoshop only apps installed not supplied by Apple.  Cannon printer driver.

I am not a big fan, at all, of Lion and Mt. Lion.

FYI, if you decide to upgrade to one of these instead of doing a re-install of Snow Leopard, you will need to install more RAM into your iMac.

The re-install of Snow Leopard shouldn't affect any third party apps you have installed, but yes, you should have a backup of what is on your iMac's internal drive.

Both Lion or Mt. Lion are serious CPU, GPU and RAM resource hogs.

You would need to purchase and install, at least, another 4 GBs of RAM to accommodate Lion or Mt. Lion.

Problem is any apps I might want to buy all require 10.7 and above. Isn't this system requirement enough?

IIRC, your machine will hold 16 GB. Since RAM's so cheap, get the additional 12 GB. BTW, since your machine can run SL and the later ones, just partition your HD, skip Lion, clone your existing SL installation to it, and upgrade that to Mtn Lion. I'm running all three w/o issues. Gives you the best of all worlds. SL for PPC apps and ML for the iOSified stuff.

Then upgrading to ML should be trouble-free. Occasionally, printer drivers don't cooperate after the upgrade, so expect the need to reinstall your Canon printer again.

EtreCheck is inert unless it's running. It is not a system modification so you can either ignore it or simply drag it to the Trash.

Nice to know someone who created TrueType System 7 was a breakthrough in its day.
